Elaine Winter
It is with true joy, yet sorrow, that our dear Mom and Grandma, (Mary) Elaine Winter, celebrated Saturday, January 1, 2022 by going home to be with her dear Lord, and to be reunited with her true love, Jack. Elaine passed after a December stay at the Peter Lougheed Centre. She was born October 19, 1927 in Calgary to Clyde and Pearl (McNabb) Pashak and was the oldest of their four children. She spent her childhood in Calgary and met her future husband, Jack Winter in her
mid-teens.
Elaine was married on June 6, 1946, to John (Jack) Edward Winter at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary. They moved to the Dalemead farm, where Jack was raised, and Elaine easily transitioned from a city girl to an accomplished farmwife. They had four children. She loved the garden and yard and was always improving on her exceptional green thumb. Alongside their other farming enterprises, they started raising turkeys in 1958 and this family business continues today as Winters Turkeys. Sadly, Jack passed away on February 22, 1971, and Elaine continued living on the family farm.
Mom surprised the whole family in 1974 when she announced her intentions to become a real estate agent in order to transition to a move to Calgary. Elaine treasured many things in her shift back to the city life. She filled her time with curling, bridge, golf, travel, and horseracing but of course her family time trumped all. Elaine was a very accomplished bridge player, travelling internationally, earning the prestigious achievement of a lifemaster. Another highlight was her ownership of standardbred racehorses.
She will be especially missed by her four children, Dan (Diana) Winter, Darrel (Corinne Dahm) Winter, Donna (Doug) Nolan, and Laurie (Neil) Jamieson. We really won the lottery having her as our mother. She is also loved by her 10 grandchildren, Kim (Ron), Lee (Tracey), Cory (Justine), Lynette (Brody), Curtis (Heather), Laurel (Lyle), Jordynn (Matthew), Aidan (Kayla), Evan, and Logan. Mom’s sister Gerri married Jack’s brother, Ron (2 brothers married 2 sisters) and this resulted in a special relationship with her niece, Caroline. Elaine was blessed with her great-grandchildren, Dallas, McKenzie, Zane, Kylee, Claire, Cecilia, Callie, Rhen, and Kael and 3 step grandchildren, Landon, Karston, and Tatum. She is survived by her sister Joan Krisch of Guelph, Ontario. She will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, and many great friends.
Elaine is preceded in eternal rest by her husband Jack; her parents; her brother, Glenn; and sister, Gerri.
We would like to thank unit 51 for their care, and the lovely doctors who visited regularly. Also, we give special thanks to Dr. Wes Thiessen of Dalemead Church who lovingly tended to Mom’s spiritual care.
A Private Family Service will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Dalemead Church. The service will be streamed for those who would like to join. For information to link to the zoom service, please contact a family member.
